Many USB-C hubs also can’t provide full charge to the MBP alongside providing powering to other devices plugged into the dock, so look up the specifications of the hub(s) you have. If your hubs have power delivery, make sure it’s capable of providing adequate power (13” MBP’s - 61W, 15” MBP - 87W). The USB-C hubs crashing vs USB-A being fine makes me think it’s a power issue. As a side note, every time I’ve walked into an Apple Store, those LG 4K displays were always flickering on movement like you’re describing.Ī redditor awhile back wrote an auto brightness program specifically for the LG 4K UltraFine auto brightness issue that might be worth trying:

How are you powering them? And are they 15” MBP’s? The LG UltraFine 4K can’t sufficiently power 15” MacBook Pros, they’re known to be finicky on Windows 10 since the monitor only officially supports MacOS. If anyone has any suggestions for what to try that would be greatly appreciated! (at this stage even finding out these are common problems would at least make me feel better!)
we went to LG regards the monitor flickering and they say it's not support for Windows 10. Interestingly some MacBook Pros seem more prone to the issues than others (despite near identical setup) - one I had would restart every few days and flicker daily - while another one has restarted twice in a few months and the flicker only happens every few day.Īpple has not been able to help and say it's windows related. We do get reports in event viewer about the light sensor on the LG displays, but we get nothing when USBC port use crashes them. switch to another tab in a browser or watching a video).ģ) Random restarts: 95% of the time happens when the machine is locked and a user logs back in (literally as they enter their password), other times it just goes black and you see the machine has restarted. If the devices are plugged in before the machine is started up this can also cause it to crash straight away or go to blue screen.Ģ) Monitors flicker on/off: Through normal use any displays (although we mostly use LG Ultrafine 4k) connected will begin to flicker, this seems to mostly happen when movement is occurring on them (e.g. If we have USBC hub plugged in (and working) and we plug a USBC device into that it can crash. If you notice this is happening you can pull out whatever you plugged in and it sometimes unfreezes and you can carry on.
We use them for MacOS at times, others we use just for MacOS, and we have had no issues with them.ġ) (this is the big one) When plugging anything in (monitor, usb hub, Ethernet port) the machine will sometimes freeze for about 10 seconds and then restart.
We have a large number of MacBook Pros (50+), many which run Windows 10 on Bootcamp, some of these are setup through bootcamp other times we use a Winclone image (which has been updated over the years) - we continue to run into three issues (all of which could be related to the USBC ports).
